Art Bastion is pleased to present Sacred Geometries as its latest exhibition.

This show brings together an international group of artists to examine the influence of natural and manufactured geometries in contemporary practice. The show, opening October 22, on view until January 28, will feature over 20 works of varying mediums, styles and disciplines. This collection cultivates a myriad of interpretations of the concept of form. In this space we can discover why some artists seek comfort in repetitive forms, and why others reject such forms in search of new shapes and dimensions.

By projecting laser light onto a series of concentric circles in a convex disk for The Geometry of Truth, Chris Levine taps into a rich history of sacred geometries in ways that are both reflective and interactive. The photographic works of Andrea Hamilton and Darya Warner delve into our relationships with the geometries of the natural world and its many biological structures. Meanwhile, Jasper Galloway and Troy Simmons’ boldly colored work alongside Annabelle Soriano and Lauren Shapiro’s monochromatic drawings and sculptures directly and indirectly all touch on traditional uses of polytopes and ideal geometric proportions. Finally, Dominique Gerolini's vivid abstract paintings uncover how sacred geometries or repeating patterns reveal themselves in the free hand.

Jasper Galloway is showing highly colourful geometric paintings in 'A Sense of Place' at the Art Bastion Gallery, Miami, Fl. 33127.

An extraordinary chapter in this creative story, one that long preceded the painting, involves the actual creation of all the materials used for this work.

Each colour we see celebrated in these works was imagined and mixed (cite technique here) by Jasper Galloway using raw pigments. The paint used (water based acrylics) belongs to an exciting and highly covetable range of eco paint colours he developed for the company Konig Colours he created with his wife Vanessa.

“The place I go to paint - my studio at the end of the garden - is like a time warp. I have no idea how long I spend in there playing with the paints, testing their elasticity, their mutability, or how clash or compliment in tone.” 

It was the very act of making this magnificent range of colours that sing in compliment, glowing and popping in rows like candy, that fostered the creation of his initial paintings. "There is something secret in this process, one developed at first as a bi-product of the paint range I made."

His first series emerged almost unconsciously, incidental creations that took on a life of their own. Testing the paints in the shed at the bottom of their garden, Jasper began to play with the various hues together on rectangles of rough cardboard laid flat on worktops in sets of three at a time. Something akin to the lines of a musical score, he worked and reworked each piece until there was a moment of resolution – a melody that emerged harmonious with notes of daisy yellow, tweety or pale melon (all names from his bespoke colour range). Jasper would stop, his instinct as a colourist – one developed over years of curating and dressing space with colour and symmetry – guiding him. Over time this instinct, given the freedom and space to develop, flourished. The artist emerged and appropriated the shed where he was experimenting into a working artist's studio.

This series 'Crunch' was created after Jasper had thrown something away – looking down at the scrunched up bit of paper in the waste bin he saw the form come back to life in geometric grids of colour. Popping brightly off the canvas these pieces reference the great pop artists of the 60s like Hockney and Lichenstein whom Jasper has long admired. This is Jasper's first group show.

A group of artists all in some way connected to a geographical region north of London will be showing for the first time in Miami, at Art Bastion, Wynwood.

A Sense of Place will showcase the phenomenal array of artistic expression found therein, one that is not only a response to place but creates a sense of it and describes how we occupy it. This particular region of Northamptonshire was home to the Washington family who lived in Sulgrave Manor, a house that was gifted after WWI to the British public by the American and British governments to celebrate in perpetuity Anglo-American relations. This show will celebrate British creative diversity, bringing a generation of British Artists to a new audience in the United States.

This group of artists - established, mid-career and emerging - have been selected for their highly original use of different mediums: Deborah Tarr’s oils are a sumptuous exploration of colour and harmony; Chris Levine’s light and lenticular works explore the meditative power of laser’s isolated frequencies – transforming how we see the portrait; Jasper Galloway’s powerful grids of colour explore the materiality of house paint and Germaine McCormack Kos’s works reflect the brilliant light that bounces off painted walls; Emma Levine’s silk and laser cut montages shimmer delicately like an underwater forest or coral reefs; Simon Allison’s lithographs explore the unlikely coupling of materials new and old and Nancy Cadogan’s quietly figurative oil paintings reveal a deep understanding of the sense of place we carry within. Collectively these works describe the endless possible iterations of our connection to place. Their work is atmospheric. Individually they illustrate where each artist found themselves at the point of their making – place in this sense is a state of mind. By traveling across the Atlantic they bring with them a particular resonance – one that transcends the specificity of their making – and captures the spirit of British art today.
